Simplicity is a choice, not an absence

The invisible work of removing the excess so that what matters can come through.

A simple interface feels inevitable once it is finished. Every element has its place, the paths seem clear, and nothing demands more attention than it should.

Getting there usually takes many decisions.

Setting priorities

When everything carries the same weight, it is hard to know where to begin. A heading, a paragraph and a link can be enough if their relationship is clear.

Before adding an element, I like to ask:

  1. What is the person trying to do?
  2. Does this information help with that task?
  3. Is there a more direct way to present it?

Space communicates too

The space between elements creates rhythm. A generous margin separates topics. A shorter line makes reading easier. A pause invites you to keep going.

Empty space can be what makes everything else understandable.

Reviewing with intention

Simplifying takes revision. Sometimes the problem is a long sentence. Sometimes it is the order of information, or a button trying to do too much.

The goal is for every part to have a reason to be there. And to leave room for the content to speak.
